How to make sun sail shades

You will need
Fabric
Tailor's chalk
Scissors
Thread
Sewing machine
Bobble trim
Eyelet pack
Cord

Directions

Decide how big you want your triangular sails to be, ours were 1.5m at the shortest edge and 2m along the remaining edges.

Fold your fabric in half length ways and measure 75cm from the fold downwards (so that when you unfold fabric this will be the shortest edge of your triangle - 1.5m in our case). Mark this line with your chalk. From your line, along the folded edge measure 2m and mark. You then need to join this point with the end of your shorter line to the edge of the fabric, to make a triangle. With the fabric still folded cut out your triangle along the chalk lines, allowing a 1cm hem along both edges.

Unfold your fabric and you will have the top triangle for your sail. Folded, use this as a template to draw out your second triangle - ensure your fabric is turned the other way round so that they can be sewn wrong sides facing.

With your two triangles cut out, position them with their wrong sides facing and roughly pin together. You will need to fold in your 1cm hem line along each edge of your triangle, as you do this thread in your bobble trim and include it as you pin in place.

Machine sew along all three sides of your sun sail shade, ensuring that you catch the hems of both pieces of fabric and the bobble trim along each length.

With your sail complete, you need to add an eyelet at each point so that the sail can be tied up easily. Follow the instructions on the eyelet pack to fix your rings in place.

Use one piece of cord per eyelet to thread through and then tie up to a post or fence as you like in your garden.
