New eco builds

As we become increasingly aware of how our homes - and the energy needed to run them - are drawing on already limited and expensive resources, eco-friendly buildings are becoming an option more of us are considering.

To get an insight into how the homes of the future are evolving to meet a changing environment, we take a look at some of the innovative eco-friendly homes being showcased at this year's Grand Designs Live, London (1st May-9th May 2010):

Pilotis House

Pilotis House

A recently finished project by designers Gaukroger and Partners, these low-tech pods are made from English chestnut shingles and a ribbed timber frame. To reduce heat loss in the winter and aid cooling in the summer the pods are raised off the ground by Douglas Fir stilts and are also highly insulated, reducing the need for heating. The inspiration behind the pods is 'up-cycling' - taking buildings that are considered not worth saving and bringing them back to a habitable state by adding lots of insulation through sustainable resources.

Archipod

Archipod Garden Office

The striking design of this 3m diameter sphere sets it apart from the more conventional garden office and is guaranteed to be a talking point for any visitors. Designed and manufactured near York, the pod is constructed mainly from timber and is insulated to a standard exceeding that of current Building Regulations.

Cub House

Cub House

Built off-site to ensure the carbon footprint is kept to an absolute minimum, the Cub will arrive fully fitted and ready to move into just 12-16 weeks after placing an order. Making it ideal for people who want to take the simple approach to a self build project.

Eco Modular Living
Eco Modular Living

Eco Modular Living Ltd transform buildings formally used as classrooms or office spaces into sleek, understated living spaces. By reusing the basic components of a building, such as floors, roofs and steel structures, carbon emissions and energy use during construction are reduced. The simple design lends itself well to the possibility of being used for student accommodation, hotels and apartments.
